Warm-blooded animals: what they are

Warm-blooded animals, homeotherms, in scientific jargon, are living beings that have their own particular management of body temperature that we are going to discover. Also we humans are warm-blooded animals, and we are in good and abundant company.

Warm-blooded animals: what they are

The warm-blooded animals they live in a condition of thermal stability of the body. This means that their tbody emperature remains stationary, within certain limits, beyond the thermal fluctuations that can occur in their environment and even beyond the heat generated during metabolic processes. We as mammals are warm-blooded animals with all the others in our class and together with the birds.

The way to tell if the oscillations are warm-blooded or not much depends on each species, on the diurnal rhythm of activity and possible lethargy.

If we are wondering how we do it, we and everyone else warm-blooded animals, to ensure a thermal constancy, it is due to various regulatory mechanisms that are managed by the vegetative and central nervous system. They concern both chemical thermoregulation and physical thermoregulation. Even the thickness and nature of the skin and coat, if present, of some animals, contributes to maintaining a good temperature.

Warm and cold blooded animals

If a certain animal is not warm-blooded, it is cold-blooded: there is no choice. Removed mammals and birds, all other vertebrates and invertebrates are to be considered heterotherms and pecilotherms. So cold-blooded animals. We humans can keep the cold blood as long as we want but we always remain among the warm-blooded animals!

Vertebrate warm-blooded animals

Among the homeothermic vertebrate animals we find the birds, with tails, covered with feathers to keep the body temperature at about 40 degrees and with an aerodynamic body suitable for cutting through the air. The wings also have feathers and the beak replaces the teeth, they are oviparous animals with internal fertilization and lay their eggs in the nests built at the time and can be classified with respect to their ability to fly.

There are those who do not, such as ostrich, rhea, rooster, peacock, skilled fliers (stork, heron, albatross, seagull, ...), birds of prey (owl, vulture, eagle, ...) passerines (robin, sparrow, finch , swallow,….) and skilled swimmers like the penguin.

Also mammals are warm-blooded animals with fur which helps them keep their body temperature constant. They are living beings with breasts, respiratory and circulatory systems, and they reproduce through internal fertilization (viviparous). We also find here various categories such as rodents, ungulates, carnivores, cetaceans, primates, bats and marsupials.
